What is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist?

An Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) is a university qualified allied health professional who can work with you to implement a clinical exercise intervention. They are specialists in the field of exercise and commonly work with people at risk of developing, or have existing, medical conditions and injuries.

The aims of AEP interventions are to prevent or manage chronic disease or injury, and assist in restoring your optimal physical function, health and wellness. These interventions are exercise-based and include health and physical activity education, advice and support for lifestyle modification with a strong focus on achieving behavioural change.

Why choose an AEP?

When you choose an Accredited Exercise Physiologist you can be assured that they will:

  • Conduct assessment and apply clinical reasoning to ensure the safety and appropriateness of exercise and physical activity interventions, which includes conducting tests of physiological measures

  • Assess movement capacity in people of all ages and levels of health, well-being or fitness

  • Develop safe, effective individualised exercise interventions

  • Provide health education, advice and support to enhance health and well-being including nutritional advice in line with national nutrition guidelines and information on relevant prescribed medicines

  • Provide exercise intervention and education for those at risk of developing a chronic condition or injury

  • Provide clinical exercise prescription, for those with existing chronic and complex medical conditions and injuries

  • Provide exercise-based rehabilitation and advice for patients in the acute/sub-acute stage of injury, surgical intervention, or during recovery to restore functional capacity and well-being

WHAT TO EXPECT

Initial Consultation

Health and Fitness Assessments

Health and Fitness Assessments

The Exercise Physiologist will always commence with a one on one consultation to review your medical history, physical limitations and personal requirements that assist with prescribing a suitable exercise plan. The plan may include regular reviews, regular functional re-assessments, in clinic and or home based exercise programs. Each plan will vary and will be individually tailored to personal requirements.

Health and Fitness Assessments

If practical to do so, our Exercise Physiologist will undertake base line measures of functional variables such as aerobic fitness, strength, flexibility, joint range of motion, balance, core strength and resting metabolic rate, to help monitor progress, review program effectiveness and assist with motivation.

Individual Follow-Up Consultations

Reviews are undertaken as necessary and allow for progress and / or modify the initial plan.

Home exercise programs are tailored to suit individual needs and goals, and will be practically applied to your daily life.

Supervised Group Classes

Individual Follow-Up Consultations

Individual Follow-Up Consultations

MPR offer supervised group exercise sessions at various times throughout the day from Monday to Friday, including some after hours options. The sessions are a cost effective way for each individual to undertake their own personalised program under the supervision of an Exercise Physiologist, while at the same time offer a supportive, safe, encouraging and friendly environment.

PHYSIOTHERAPY VS EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY

What's the difference?

Although physiotherapy and exercise physiology share similarities in their practise, they are not the same thing. Both are allied health professionals who have completed a minimum of 4 years' of study at university.

Exercise physiologists primarily treat patients using clinical exercise interventions as their main modality for chronic disease prevention and management, musculoskeletal injuries and weight management. There is a strong focus on health education, behavioural change and self-management concepts. Physiotherapists are health care professionals who assess, diagnose, treat and manage acute injury, disability and pain through physical therapy.
